How to Reduce Energy Consumption at Home
They say charity begins at home; but with all the earnest ongoing debates on global warming, looks like cutting carbon emissions should also begin at home! Aside from reducing your electricity bills, reducing the consumption of energy at home also goes a long way in saving our natural resources for the future generations.
We have reached the point where it’s becoming essential to save energy because its manufacturing and use affects the environment and all the people living in it. Wind, water and solar energies are considered as clean, renewable sources of energy that do not pollute the environment; fossil fuels like coal, gas and crude oil products on the other hand are non-renewable sources of energy that lead to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The time is fast approaching when we need to really buckle-down and make energy-conservation a part of everyday life – if we want to slow down global warming, that is!
When we talk about energy conservation, we are simply referring to reducing energy conservation through lower and more efficient use of appliances that use energy – whether at home or at work. Some basic steps are by simplifying life and doing things yourself manually. And if it isn’t necessary, don’t buy electrical appliances and if it has a thermostat, keep it as close to outside temperature as comfortable to save energy! Get into the habit of turning off lights when leaving home and unplug appliances and electronics to eliminate vampire energy drainage.
Aside from these, here are more tips for saving your wallet and our planet:
- Don’t place lamps or other electrical appliances near ACs as their heat emissions confuses the thermostat and keeps it running longer than normal.
- Change to CFL bulbs as they create less heat, last longer as well as consume 75% less energy!
- Set your AC’s thermostat as close to outside temperature as comfortable as they are real energy-hoggers; using a ceiling fan along with the AC also helps in this.
